Dorothy is a senior at Shenzhen College of International Education. After shadowing physicians in a Department of Hematology, she became interested in the human side of medicine—particularly the experiences of care that unfold beyond diagnosis and treatment. With family roots in Jiangxi through her mother, she grew up with a strong connection to the province and its local culture.
Combining this connection with her passion for storytelling, Dorothy launched Unseen Cast of Care in 2024, an oral‑history project exploring the community surrounding Jiangxi Cancer Hospital. Stemming from a charity kitchen initiative, she carried out fieldwork in and around the hospital. Beginning with its founder, she interviewed over 50 participants including patients, family caregivers, nursing assistants, volunteers, and medical staff, listening to how illness and care are experienced from different positions within the medical system. She developed these conversations into 28 narrative profiles, seeking to document the people, relationships, and everyday acts of care that can easily remain unseen within institutional medicine.
About
Visited Seishu no Sato in Wakayama, one of the birthplaces of Japan’s Rangaku medicine. Researched the conflict and integration between Western medicine and Kampo medicine in Japanese medical history and wrote a TCR history paper on Rangaku.
Beyond these projects, she is interested in medical history research and enjoys singing and writing.
Out of interest in public health and life sciences, she studies China’s rare disease policies and difficulties of patient groups. She created her WeChat official account Fabry and released popular science articles, to help rare diseases be seen by the public and make rare diseases not rare.
As the South China Representative & Club Development Advisor for China iHOSA, she organizes students to participate in competitions and events, and facilitates the rollout and implementation of public health outreach initiatives in schools and local communities.
